Remember, everyone can make responsible choices every day to protect our environment – every action counts! Make responsible purchases and reduce waste whenever possible. Reduce, reuse, recycle and always dispose of waste in recycling or trash containers. Participate in clean ups or do your own by removing trash year round at your favorite park, beach, or in your neighborhood.
Underwater cleanup videos
- This underwater cleanup video was produced in 2017 by Volusia County Community Information and recognized in 2018 with a bronze award in the national Telly Awards in the Nature/Wildlife category. Other winners included national shows such as Sea Rescue, Ocean Treks and Jack Hanna's Wild Countdown. Volusia County Government was the only local television program to win an award.
- This underwater cleanup video produced in 2013 shows the extensive amount of discarded fishing line at the north jetty in Ponce Inlet. It also demonstrates the effort it takes to remove this dangerous web of debris. When left in the water, fishing line can entangle marine life in the area like sea turtles and manatees. Fishing along rocky structures, like jetties, can be difficult for even the most experienced fishermen who have to break the line if they get hooked onto a rock underwater. If this happens, please try your best to retrieve the broken line and recycle it in designated mono filament recycling bins. These underwater cleanup efforts are conducted monthly during the summer. In 2014 more than 600 pounds of fishing line and trash was removed by participants.
