VOLUNTEERS INVITED TO ASSIST WITH EXOTIC PLANT REMOVAL PROJECT AT LAKE COLBY PARK

Environmental enthusiasts are invited to remove exotic plants at Lake Colby/Royal Park, 1099 Massachusetts St., Cassadaga, from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10.

Historical features at Lake Colby/Royal Park, such as the orange grove and Milk House, are overgrown with air potato vines and other invasive plants. The exotic plant removal project will be an important part of upcoming renovations, which will return the park to its historic state.

The volunteer-based exotic plant removal program strives to educate residents and visitors about problems related to exotic, invasive plants in our communities. It also promotes the concepts of planting native plants, being water wise, and being responsible when using fertilizers or pesticides.

Environmental Management will provide gloves, water and the tools needed for the removal. Volunteers may bring their favorite gardening gloves and tools if they wish. Everyone also is encouraged to wear comfortable work clothing and bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.

The project is sponsored by Volusia County’s Environmental Management and Parks, Recreation and Culture divisions. Following the project, volunteers will be treated to lunch on-site. All participants are asked to RSVP for the event so ample supplies will be available.

For more information and to register to volunteer, please contact Michelle Webster, project coordinator, at (386) 736-5927, ext. 2330.
