VOLUSIA COUNTY FIRE SERVICES RESPONDS TO STRUCTURE FIRE IN ORANGE CITY

Firefighters with Volusia County Fire Services responded Monday morning to a fire at 775 Hamilton Ave., Orange City.

According to Bill Whalen, a Volusia County Fire Services battalion commander, the call came in at 9:52 a.m. and Station 31 (Orange City) and Station 32 (DeLand), Tanker Engine 42 (DeLand), Squad 35, and Battalion 40 responded.

When firefighters arrived on scene they found heavy smoke coming from a single-story structure and two people laying in the front yard with what appeared to be serious burn injuries. In the rear of the home, a citizen was spraying water with a garden hose through a broken sliding glass door into a dining room area. Upon further investigation firefighters found a Christmas tree smoldering in the dining room area and small active flames. Firefighters quickly extinguished remaining flames and dragged the Christmas tree outside.

According to eyewitnesses, the two people were taking down a Christmas tree and it fell over into a lit candle. Both patients were transported to an area hospital.

The fire is currently under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
