HALIFAX/INDIAN RIVER CLEANUP MAY 2

In conjunction with Join Hands Day, Volusia County Environmental Management will host the 21st annual Halifax/Indian River cleanup at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at 15 sites in Volusia County. Boaters, scouts, civic organizations, environmental groups, and business and individual volunteers are encouraged to help clean the waterways by removing trash and debris.

“Last year, 635 volunteers picked up 17.9 tons of trash along 56 miles of riverbank,” said William Hobson, coordinator for the event from Volusia County Environmental Management. “Items picked up included tires, CD players, computer monitors and keyboards, shoes and other clothing, television sets, couches, and mattresses. Volunteers also found recyclable items such as aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and monofilament fishing line.”

Supplies may be picked up at:

  • Tomoka State Park, 2099 N. Beach St., Ormond Beach. (The entry fee will be waived for cleanup participants.)
  • Cassen Park, 1 South Beach St., Ormond Beach
  • Sunrise Park North, 1135 Riverside Drive, Holly Hill
  • Tuscawilla Park, 1000 Orange Ave., Daytona Beach
  • Halifax Harbor Marina, 450 Basin St., Daytona Beach
  • Riverside Pavilion Park, 3431 S. Ridgewood Drive, Port Orange
  • Dunlawton Bridge boat ramp, west side of the bridge, Port Orange
  • Ponce Inlet Town Hall, 4680 S. Peninsula Drive, Ponce Inlet
  • Turnbull Bay, west end of Willard Street at the bayshore, New Smyrna Beach
  • Buena Vista Park, DeSoto Drive, off the North Causeway, New Smyrna Beach
  • Riverside Park, under the S.R. 44 bridge, New Smyrna Beach
  • Mary McLeod Bethune Park, 640 Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd., Bethune Beach
  • JB’s Fish Camp, 859 Pompano Ave., Bethune Beach
  • Menard-May Park, 413 South Riverside Drive, Edgewater
  • Riverbreeze Parkpublic boat ramp, 250 H.H. Burch Road, Oak Hill

Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, April 29. A free T-shirt, reusable shopping bag, and lunch at Halifax Harbor Marina or Buena Vista Park will be available for those who preregister.

Participants are encouraged to bring water and wear sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, work gloves and comfortable clothing. They also may bring rakes and canoes.
