MAY OUTINGS ON VOLUSIA COUNTY CONSERVATION
LANDS
See and experience Volusia County Conservation Lands on guided hikes
of easy-to-moderate difficulty. Learn about the diverse habitats of the
county and the plants and animals that make them special. Hikes include
hands-on learning and fun adventures on beautiful Volusia County
Conservation Lands.
• 9 a.m. - noon Saturday, May 3: Capture Nature Through Painting:
Experience natural Florida and the St. Johns River through the
perspective of plein art painters - painters who paint outside. Sandra
Wilson, artist and founder of the DeBary Art League and Gateway Center
for the Arts, will lead a free “paint out” along the scenic shore of the
St. Johns River at Hickory Bluff Preserve (at the end of Guise Road off
Maytown Road, Osteen). After learning the basics of color, participants
will try their hand at creating their own paintings. This outing is open
to adults and families and the art materials are provided. Participants
are asked to bring a folding chair.
• 9 a.m. - noon Saturday, May 10: Mosses, Liverworts and Ferns -
Florida’s Green Carpets: Discover the world of mosses, liverworts
and ferns - beautiful, yet simple plants that form green carpets in
Florida habitats during a free outdoor adventure at Bicentennial Youth
Park, 3300 New York Ave., DeLand (one mile east of the Volusia County
Fairgrounds). This free adventure is a lab and field explorations led by
Dr. Bill Grey, an adjunct field botany professor from Rollins College.
Space is limited and registration is required.
Participants need to wear appropriate clothing and comfortable hiking
or walking shoes and should bring binoculars and a camera on the outdoor
hikes.
