‘ROAD SCHOLAR’ TO PORTRAY CONSERVATIONIST

Betty Jean Steinshouer will portray conservationist Marjory Stoneman Douglas at 7 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Lake Helen City Hall, 327. S. Lakeview Drive. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Lake Helen Public Library.

Douglas was a journalist and environmentalist known for her defense of the Everglades against draining and development. In 1947, she wrote “Everglades: River of Grass,” which brought attention to the need to preserve the vast marshlands.

Steinshouer is a member of the Florida Humanities Council’s “Road Scholars” program, which presents educational programs around the state.
