VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PROVIDE VALUABLE SCRUB JAY DATA

Would you like to learn more about the Florida scrub jay and how to protect them? Would you like to become a citizen scientist? Volusia County Land Acquisition and Management and The Nature Conservancy invite you to become part of the Jay Watch corps of citizen scientists and attend a free training from 8 a.m. - noon Saturday, May 31, at Lyonia Preserve.

Lyonia Preserve is home to the federally protected Florida scrub jay and boasts more than 100 of these birds throughout the year. It is adjacent to the Deltona Regional Library, 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona.

The May 31 training is provided by biologists and includes learning about the Florida scrub jay, their habitat and how to survey their populations. Volunteers will be able to put their training to use in June and July as important data about the scrub jay is collected.

No experience is needed to become a citizen scientist. For more information or to register for the training, please contact Cheryl Miller at (863) 635-7506 or cmillett@tnc.org.
