EMERGENCY RESPONSE TRAINING
ENDS WITH EXERCISE APRIL 5
Several citizens from northwest Volusia County will be completing their
Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) Saturday, April 5, as they
participate in a disaster scenario at the Pierson Community Center, 124
W. Washington Ave., Pierson. From 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., nine trainees
will put their newly acquired skills to the test in a mock disaster in
and around the center. Local volunteers will pose as victims as part of
the exercise.
This team is only the second Spanish-speaking team in the northwest area
of Volusia County to be trained. Emergency Management officials hope to
continue to offer the training in Spanish in this area and more citizens
will volunteer to be trained.
“CERT training provides these volunteers with basic disaster response
skills, such as fire safety, primary search and rescue, and first aid,”
said Charlie Craig, Volusia County Emergency Management Director. “It
will enable them not only to be better prepared as individuals, but also
to assist their families and others in their neighborhood and workplaces
following a disaster.”
