MARINE SCIENCE CENTER OFFERS SEA CREATURE PROGRAMS, BIRDING HIKES AND MORE IN MAY

The Marine Science Center (MSC) offers a wide variety of programs for youths and adults throughout the year, and the opportunities continue this May. All programs are open to the public. MSC admission applies for all on-site events, and reservations are required.

Students young and old can discover the many wonders of marine life in environmentally rich Volusia County through the following opportunities:

• 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3: Search of Sea Creatures - Participants should meet the MSC lab, and a beach walk will follow. Naturalist and shell collector Joel Wooster will lead a beach hike where participants can collect shells and other artifacts for follow-up identification in the MSC lab. Shell collections will be on-site for inspection; and participants are encouraged to bring any Florida shell for specific identification. (Please note: Any living, indigenous species collected on the beach walk will be returned upon completion of program.) Please call 386/304-5545 or 386/304-5529 to register.

• 8 a.m. Wednesday, May 7: Beach Walk at Bicentennial Park, 1800 N. Oceanshore Blvd., Ormond Beach - Join MSC’s Director Michael Brothers for a guided walk and learn all about the animals and plants indigenous to this part of northern Volusia County. Meet at the park entrance. Registration is required. Please call 386/304-5545 or 386/304-5529.

• 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 21: Smyrna Dunes Park Beach Walk - Enjoy a guided beach walk of Smyrna Dunes Park. Join the MSC staff for a hike along 250 acres of pristine land at the northernmost point of New Smyrna Beach. Come prepared to hike the beach and nature trails. The park is surrounded by water on three sides and is home to many unique species of plants and animals. Participants should meet at the picnic tables at Smyrna Dunes Park. • 10 a.m. Saturday, May 31: Overview of the Indian River Lagoon and Tips for Reducing Pollution at the Marine Science Center Lab - Join Kathy Hill, Education Coordinator for the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program for this presentation where she will address the ecological impact of the Indian River Lagoon and how the St. Johns River Water Management District is working to preserve the lagoon.. The Marine Science Center, 100 Lighthouse Drive, Ponce Inlet, is open from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday, and noon - 4 p.m. Sunday.
