Public libraries add language-learning system

The Volusia County Public Library system has added the Mango Languages online language-learning system to its database at www.volusialibrary.org. Mango is free to library cardholders and offers a fast and convenient solution to the community’s growing language-learning needs.

Mango Languages offers language courses for Spanish, French, German, Italian, Greek, Russian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese and Mandarin Chinese. It also offers English as a second language for Polish, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese speakers.

According to its web site, Mango uses real-life situations and actual conversations to teach a new language. By listening to and repeating material, library patrons can learn individual words and phrases and how they're used in practical situations and conversations.

The site’s translation feature allows patrons to translate words or phrases to and from 10 languages.

Library employees can use Mango at their public service desks to communicate with foreign-speaking patrons. The patrons can type in their question, and the employee clicks a button to have it translated into English, and vice versa.
