Applications are being accepted for Volusia County
Government’s Citizens Academy, a hands-on awareness program designed to
educate and inform citizens about how county government works and
operates.
The free 12-week program, which meets from 8 a.m.
- 5 p.m. Tuesdays, will begin Aug. 18. There will be no classes Sept. 22
and Nov. 3.
The Citizens Academy offers a wide range of
seminars and workshops featuring the inner workings of Volusia County
Government. Topics include elections, growth management, community
services, public protection, property assessments, budgets and more.
Citizens will ride with the Volusia County Beach Patrol, visit county
parks and preserves, and shadow a county official for a hands-on look at
county organization.
Since the Citizens Academy was introduced in 2002,
more than 250 residents have completed the program, many of whom have
moved on to fill Volusia County Council advisory board roles or signed
up as volunteers in other capacities in local government.
Applications are available online at
www.volusia.org/citizensacademy and must be turned in
to the County Manager's office by July 15. The Citizens Academy program
is limited to 25 participants, and there is an attendance requirement.
