Listen to a sea tale at DeBary Hall July 18

Spend the afternoon with Edward Murphy, captain of the S.S. Commodore, wrecked off the coast of Ponce Inlet in 1897 and made immortal by Stephen Crane’s short story “The Open Boat.”

The legendary character will be portrayed by John Mann at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at DeBary Hall Historic Site, 210 Sunrise Blvd. Mann, a volunteer tour guide at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, will discuss the ill-fated voyage and Crane’s story and writing style. Mann is a retired college instructor from New Jersey and also does a first-person interpretation of a 1930s Ponce Inlet Lighthouse keeper.

His talk is part of Lemonade Lectures, a free learning series about Volusia County’s history. The lecture will be at the visitors center with a view of DeBary Hall. Light refreshments will be provided.

DeBary Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is owned by the state and managed by the county’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Division.
