The Volusia County Health Department and Volusia County Emergency Management are teaming up to launch a public information campaign, “Let’s Fight Flu Together” to educate citizens and visitors about influenza -seasonal flu and H1N1 swine flu.

“Through this campaign, we strive to assure that everyone knows if they are at risk for influenza,” said Dr. Bonnie Sorensen, Volusia County Health Department director. “"It is also important for Volusia County residents and visitors to protect themselves against influenza which includes getting vaccines.”

“We approached this plan as a partnership between the county and the health department so we can join resources and expertise,” said Charlie Craig, Volusia County Emergency Management director. “In turn, I believe we will reach as many people as possible with the necessary information in the timeliest manner.”

The county and health department are organizing a task force of public and private public information officers who represent primary and secondary schools, local businesses, cities, law enforcement, hospitals, social service agencies and more. Messages in the campaign will focus on overall prevention, preparedness, H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccination locations, and flu facts, and will be customized for the most high-risk groups and key audiences.

Localized public education campaign materials will be augmented by Florida Department of Health and the Centers for Disaster Control and Prevention resources, which include influenza prevention advertising on Votran buses, radio and television public service announcements, flu prevention videos and more.

Print materials will be created in English and Spanish, accessible through the health department’s web site, www.volusiahealth.com. Additionally, residents can sign up for e-mail notifications and updates through www.volusia.org.

Federal funds received from the Florida Department of Health through the Volusia County Health Department are supporting the public education campaign.
