VOLUSIA COUNTY OFFERS ADOPT-A-PARK, PARK VOLUNTEERING, AND MEMORIAL/HONORARY TREE PLANTING PROGRAMS

Volusia County is blessed with some of the most beautiful parks in the Southeast, and more than one million people visit Volusia County parks annually.

Volusia County Leisure Services Division manages more than 10,000 acres of park sites, including local and district parks, boat ramps, fishing docks and school park sites. With community involvement programs, citizens can get more involved in caring for these precious natural commodities.

Leisure Services is seeking citizens’ help in efforts to beautify parks and keep them free of litter through its Adopt-a-Park program. Local community organizations, businesses, school groups and individuals over the age of 18 that are interested in beautifying a section of a park within their community are encouraged to participate. This program, like the county’s Adopt-a-Beach program, gives Volusia County residents, families and organizations ownership of some of our most beloved resources.

Park volunteers also are needed to assist with services available in parks. Leisure Services is seeking men, women and service organizations (child or adult) that have a wide variety of backgrounds, skills and experiences, enjoy working with people and want to make a commitment to the community.

Residents also may consider planting a tree in memory of or in honor of a family member or loved one, such as a new baby or a deceased friend or relative. Volusia County Leisure Services offers a Memorial/Honorary Tree Planting program. Persons or families purchase a tree from a local nursery association member and Leisure Services staff will work with them to designate a site in a County park for planting. Maintenance and protection of the tree will be provided by the County for up to three months after planting. Recommended trees for the tree planting program include but are not limited to Live Oak, Southern Magnolia, Bald Cypress, Sycamore and Mangrove. Leisure Services staff also will place a plaque at the base of tree in remembrance. All expenses (tree, plaque, etc.) are the responsibility of the donor.
