PASSENGER JET LANDS SAFELY AT DBIA
FOLLOWING
IN-FLIGHT FIRE
A small fire broke out in the auxiliary power unit of a United
Express regional jet as it approached the Daytona Beach International
Airport at about 9:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 26. The jet's onboard extinguishing system
put the fire out before the aircraft landed.
Flight 7275 was inbound from Washington Dulles International Airport
at about 10,000 feet when the fire occurred.
Firefighters from Volusia County Fire Services Station 17, which is
based at the airport, met the jet on the runway and safely escorted all
41 passengers and crew members from the plane. According to Fire
Services Lt. Scott Black, the passengers were calm and unaware that
there had been a fire. No injuries were reported.
Firefighters entered the cargo hold and avionics compartment and
found no fire damage inside the aircraft. There was, however, minor
flame damage to the plane's exterior. Following the inspection,
firefighters turned the jet over to United Airlines.
