CodeRED emergency call-down system

Residents with unlisted numbers can ensure they receive automated information during a localized emergency by logging on to the county's web site. To improve the notification process, Volusia County Emergency Management has a new telephone emergency call-down system called CodeRED.

CodeRED gives those who want to be included an easy and secure way to get added to the list.

If an emergency occurs in a localized area, emergency officials define a geographic area. The system calls all homes and businesses in the area with a recorded message to alert them of the emergency and provide instructions. CodeRED uses a database of numbers listed in the telephone book and can initiate up to 60,000 calls per minute.

The system is browser-based and allows residents to log on and add their unlisted telephone number and address to the database. Landline or cell phone numbers may be used. However, a physical address must be entered to provide emergency officials geographic latitude and longitude coordinates.

Only Emergency Management staff have access to the updates. Information only will be used for emergency notification.

The cost of the system was $25,000 for 10,000 call minutes. Each additional minute is 25 cents.

The link to enter unlisted telephone numbers can be found here. Telephone numbers/addresses provided will be used solely by Emergency Management officials to provide emergency information. However, the database is a public record in accordance with Florida public records law.

More information on CodeRED can be found on the company’s website at www.coderedweb.com.
