Historic Preservation Board to
host training Oct. 20
Volusia County’s Historic Preservation
Board will host a training workshop presented by the Florida Division of
Historical Resources at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the DeBary Hall
Historic Site, 210 Sunrise Blvd., DeBary.
The workshop will provide board members
with training required under its newly designated certified local
government status. Staff and board members from other state-certified
local governments also are invited. The training will introduce the
basics of preservation planning, resource identification and
preservation education. Other topics will include survey methodology,
legal issues affecting historic preservation, the National Register of
Historic Places and certified local government grant opportunities. The
workshop will be facilitated by Michael Zimney, certified local
government coordinator for the State of Florida.
The Historic Preservation Board is
appointed by the Volusia County Council to issue certificates of
designation for eligible historic resources such as structures,
archaeological sites and historic districts; and certificates of
appropriateness for demolition, alteration, relocation and new
construction. The board advises the County Council on matters related to
historic preservation policy, including use, management and maintenance
of county-owned historic resources.
Area residents who are interested in
serving on a county or city preservation board are invited to attend the
free workshop and are asked to sign up by Oct. 16.
In accordance with the Americans with
Disabilities Act and Florida Statutes, persons with disabilities needing
special accommodation to participate in the proceedings should request
assistance at least two business days before the date of the meeting.
For registration, information or
accommodation, please contact Historic Preservation Officer Julie Adams
Scofield at (386) 736-5953, ext. 2008, or
