BUSH PICKS UP TWO VOTES
DURING COUNT OF OVERSEAS BALLOTS
Presidential candidate George
Bush picked up another two votes in Volusia County Friday as the Volusia
County Canvassing Board essentially wrapped up the November 7 general
election.
Under federal law, overseas ballots
postmarked by November 7 can be accepted for 10 days after the election to
allow time for mail delivery.
The Canvassing Board convened at 5 p.m.
Friday at the County Administration Center in DeLand to review 65 overseas
ballots that had been received by the County’s elections office since
November 7.
After a detail review of each ballot to see
how many qualified under the rules, the Canvassing Board accepted 24 for
count. Bush received 11 new votes and Al Gore received nine new votes.
Monica Moorehead received one vote.
Others receiving votes from the overseas
ballots included: Bill McCollum, 10 votes for U.S. Senator; Bill Nelson,
four votes for U.S. Senator; Jennifer Carroll, one vote for U.S.
Representative, District 3; Ander Crenshaw, one vote for U.S.
Representative, District 4; Tom Sullivan, two votes for U.S.
Representative; John Mica, six votes for U.S. Representative District 7;
and Dan Vaughen, four votes for U.S. Representative District 7.
The Canvassing Board also voted unanimously
to end its appeal of a lawsuit originally filed in Circuit Court in Leon
County seeking more time to complete the hand count of votes. Since the
County has completed its ballot count and certified the results, the
Canvassing Board said the appeal in state middle district court isn’t
necessary. But just to be sure, the County Attorney was directed to wait
until November 22 to take action.
The final total in the Presidential race in
Volusia County have Gore beating Bush by a margin of 97,313 - 82,368. More
information is available here.
(These totals become official at midnight
November 17).
