December outings on Volusia County conservation lands

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season as you enjoy an outdoor adventure on Volusia County conservation lands in December.

• 9 a.m. - noon Saturday, Dec. 5: Nature into art - holiday style - Nature will inspire and provide materials to get into the holiday spirit during this adventure at Bicentennial Youth Park, 3300 New York Ave., DeLand. After a short hike to collect materials, participants will create art pieces from mud, leaves, sticks, seeds and vines. Artists from the Gateway Center for the Arts and Dorrie Padgitt, a master naturalist, will lead the creative activities. All of the items created will allow participants to take the natural experience home. This adventure is free; materials are provided.

• 9 a.m. - noon Thursday, Dec. 10: Bike the woods - ride-about - Enjoy a bike ride through Longleaf Pine Preserve with a few stops to explore. Participants will set off for a 6-mile ride through the preserve. The trail will include hard-packed road, grassy roads, and occasional mud areas. Off-road bicycle tires are a necessity for this outing. For this adventure, participants will meet at the west entrance on S.R. 44, approximately 2.5 miles east of the Volusia County Fairgrounds in DeLand.

• 9 - 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11: Guided hike of Wiregrass Prairie Preserve - Take a 3-mile guided hike at Wiregrass Prairie Preserve to see and experience this Volusia County conservation land, and the many plants and animals that call it home. Wiregrass Prairie Preserve is on Lopez Road (off Pell Road), Osteen.

For all of Volusia County Land Acquisition and Management Division outings, space is limited and pre-registration is required; event locations may change due to weather or road conditions. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes that match the weather and walking or hiking shoes. Participants also should bring water.
