VOLUSIA COUNTY FIRE SERVICES RESPONDS TO CLUBHOUSE FIRE IN DEBARY

Firefighters with Volusia County Fire Services responded Friday morning to a fire at the Meadowlea on the River Clubhouse, 2 Leisure World Drive, DeBary.

According to Nick Castelli, a Volusia County Fire Services battalion commander, the call came in at 11:05 a.m. and Station 33, located in DeBary, quickly responded with Engines 33 and 31, Tanker Engine 32, Squad 35, Battalion 30 and Division 12. A second alarm was called at 11:17 a.m. for additional assistance and Engine 34 and Tanker 36 responded, along with Engine 68 from Orange City Fire Services.

When firefighters arrived on scene they found the clubhouse, a single-story structure, with heavy smoke and flames coming from the kitchen area on the south side of the building. There were no reports of people in the clubhouse at the time of the fire.

The firefighters went to work, making a forced entry because the building was locked, and quickly made an interior attack to the fire. According to Castelli, firefighters were able to confine the fire to a storage room off of the kitchen area and to the attic of the building (approximately only 20 percent of the building was affected).

The firefighters then used thermal imaging gear to locate and clear any potential hot spots. There were no injuries to the firefighters. According to Castelli, the damage to the clubhouse is estimated to be less than $50,000 due to the quick response.

The fire is currently under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
