CITY/COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS ON DUTY TOGETHER BEGINNING TODAY

Firefighters from the City of Holly Hill and Volusia County Fire Services jointly began staffing County Fire Station 11 today in Holly Hill.

“This allows the city and County to cross jurisdictional boundaries to provide the closest, most time-efficient response to emergencies,” said County Fire Services Director Jim Tauber. “We’re also able to provide an increased level of service without increasing costs for either agency.”

The agencies have entered into an interlocal agreement to share the station. Using the same number of staff (9) previously used to cover shifts at two stations, the agencies are combining them at the shared site. Shifts have been increased from two to three firefighters for each 24-hour shift.

“This goes further than enhancing the level of cooperation between the two governments,” Tauber said. “It enhances the level of service to residents served by the station.”

County Fire Station 11 is at 2580 Derbyshire Road.

In June, the County broke ground on County Fire Station 16 at Halifax Plantation. The station will be jointly funded with Flagler County. It is expected to open in early 2005.
