JOHN HEADRICK NAMED FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR

A knack for repairing small engines is but one of the qualities that helped John Headrick to earn the title as Volusia County Firefighter of the Year.

“Even though he’s been with the division for a relatively brief time, Firefighter Headrick has made a very positive impact within our organization,” said County Fire Chief Jim Tauber. “He’s made a name for himself by repairing apparatus from several stations in addition to his daily assignments at the station. Also, his enthusiasm is inexhaustible.”

The nearly two-year employee is stationed at County Fire Station 32, 2800 Firehouse Road, DeLand.

“His actions go beyond his normal duties and the parameters of “other duties as assigned,” said co-worker County Fire Captain Mike Inglett. “In the nine years I’ve been with the division, I’ve never witnessed anything close to the quick turnaround times and quality of work he has been able to produce in repairing small engines.”

To be eligible for the annual Fire Services award, firefighters must be named Firefighter of the Quarter. Supervisors nominate firefighters based on contributions and commitment to the organization and County citizens, Tauber said. This includes provisions of service, efforts to receive training and education, and actions that inspire others.

Headrick, 24, lives in Orange City.

Other Fire Services staff to earn honors at the annual banquet are:

  • Eric Nicholson, Award of Excellence
  • Greg McLarnan, Paramedic of the Year
  • Roger Harris, Emergency Medical Technician of the Year
  • John Pasqualle, Firewalker of the Year
  • Arleen Redmond, Technical Rescue Team Member of the Year
  • Jose Lopez, HazMat Team Member of the Year
  • Donald Johnson, Fire Police of the Year
  • Terry Boczkus, Staff Member of the Year
  • Nicole D’Ercole, Explorer of the Year
  • Osteen Fire Station 36, unit citation.
