back to news releases March 19, 2004 “GREEN” GROUPS TO BE HONORED AT TOMOKA LANDFILL DAY APRIL 2 As part of the “It’s Easy Being Green” corporate recycling campaign, the Volusia County Council and Volusia County Solid Waste/Recycling will recognize “green” businesses, a residential group and Volusia County’s Adopt-a-Road volunteers during its annual Earth Month observance. Recognitions are part of a ceremony at 11:15 a.m. at the Tomoka Landfill Open House, Friday, April 2. The Volusia County Council will honor Homac, Boston Whaler and the residents of John Knox Village for exemplifying proper waste reduction and recycling. Adopt-A-Road volunteer groups will be thanked for their roadway beautification efforts. The open house from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Volusia County’s Tomoka Landfill on Tomoka Farms Road in Daytona Beach will include educational materials and environmental tours of the woody waste recycling area, the regional recycling facility, methane wells that convert solid waste to energy and sites of natural beauty and conservation. A Birds of Prey exhibit, including an American Bald Eagle, will be featured and refreshments will be available. The “It’s Easy Being Green… at home, at work” campaign consists of billboards, radio ads and print materials displaying a simple message to county residents and businesses. Volusia County’s largest businesses received a promotional item this winter explaining how to save money by reducing waste and recycling. “The message is simple because recycling is not difficult,” said Joe Grusauskas, Volusia County Solid Waste Director. “Reducing waste by recycling is just responsible management - it saves money and is good for our environment.” The long-term corporate recycling awareness program encourages business employees and owners to recycle at work many of the same materials they recycle at home. Before approaching businesses, Volusia County Government successfully tested the corporate program by asking county staff to include steel and aluminum cans, bottles, cardboard, and junk mail to the mixed office paper already being recycled. Grusauskas said the County saved $180,000 in waste disposal costs the first year.
