In December 2009, passenger traffic at Daytona
Beach International Airport (DBIA) increased 5 percent over traffic in
December 2008, and the airport’s two major carriers reported strong
passenger loads.
During December, 28,316 passengers traveled
through the Volusia County Government-operated airport, compared with
27,043 in December 2008. For the 12-month period ending Dec. 31, 2009,
423,725 passengers were recorded at the airport, compared with 594,871
in 2008 and representing a 29-percent decrease.
December’s traffic increase followed a
12-percent increase in November passenger traffic after consecutive
monthly declines in passenger traffic since June 2008. According to
airport officials, December’s traffic increase may be signaling an
improved local economy, and indicate initial recovery after national,
system-wide declines in 2007 and 2008. “Recent traffic increases are
showing a rebound in our market, which we hope will continue into 2010
and beyond,” said DBIA Director of Aviation Dennis McGee.
Also in December, airlines at DBIA reported
strong passenger loads. Delta Air Lines filled 83 percent of available
seats; US Airways filled 90 percent. Delta’s advance schedule for
February, March and April also demonstrates an increase over last year
in the number of seats and flights offered. More and larger jet aircraft
also are scheduled during the busy winter months.
