Continental Airlines Wednesday will launch
daily seasonal jet service between Daytona Beach International Airport and
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Officials from Continental, the
Airport and the Volusia County Council will cut the ribbon on the first
flight in a ceremony at 11:30 a.m. at the Continental ticket counter in
the lobby of the main terminal.
“This is very positive news for the
Airport and the region,” said Airport Director Dennis McGee, who noted
that Daytona Beach has been a strong winter and Spring Break destination
for Midwest and Canadian travelers. The new service will help to meet the
needs of those passengers during the busy season.
Continental Express, the regional
subsidiary of Continental Airlines, will operate the new seasonal flight
using ERJ-145 regional jets, according to McGee. The new flight will
depart the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, Continental’s third
largest hub, at 9:15 a.m. and arrive in Daytona Beach at 11:43 a.m. The
return flight will depart Daytona Beach at 12:10 p.m. and arrive in
Cleveland at 2:33 p.m.
The seasonal Cleveland service will
increase Continental’s daily flights from Daytona Beach to three
arrivals and departures.
The new service is the result of combined
efforts of the Airport and Volusia’s three tourism advertising
authorities that will provide marketing assistance and support to launch
the new service, McGee said. The service is in effect until May 31.
In addition, Continental also announced the
airline intends to continue its year-round nonstop jet service to New
York, according to Bob Cortelyou, Continental’s Staff Vice-president of
Scheduling. Twice-daily nonstop service to Newark Liberty International
Airport began in December 2002. The airline said the airport’s marketing
efforts have contributed to the New York route’s development.
