Leaves
The Florida Basswood's heart-shaped leaves can
be up to 8" long and 5" wide. The leaves have coarsely toothed margins and may
or may not be white-fuzzy on the underside.
Flowers
Flowers are yellow-green, slightly show, and appear during the summer.
Fruit
Tan, round/oval fruit measures about 1/3 inch in diameter.
Trunk
Florida Basswood trees have a
straight trunk with light brown bark. The bark is smooth on young trees, but furrows with
age.
Propagation
Florida Basswood is propagated by
seeds. However, its seeds are very difficult to germinate. For example, if you
plant fresh seeds in pots or in the ground and leave them outdoors, only about 15% will
germinate over a period of 2-3 years. In order to get these seeds to germinate,
nursery operations employ considerable pre-treatment methods.
Landscape usage
Florida Basswood is useful as a shade tree. It looks good when planted near the street.
Interesting Facts
The tough and fibrous inner bark of the Florida Basswood was used by
probably all Native American peoples for fabric, clothing, cordage, basketry, and canoe
construction. |
