Windmill Palm
Trachycarpus fortunei
.

Windmill Palms are seen on tropical postcards internationally.  Besides their striking beauty, they also have high frost and salt tolerance.

Leaves
Palmate leaves range in color from dark green to yellow-green leaves that seem almost silvery on the underside. The leaves are held on thin 3 foot flattened stems that are finely toothed along both edges. Leaves are circular, about 3 feet in diameter and segmented about halfway. They are flat with leaf segment tips that are generally held stiffly.

Flowers
Yellow flowers slip out of packet-like  buds in late winter and early spring.

Fruit
Round, blue fruit is less than ½ an inch in length.

Trunk
Covered with dense, brown, hair-like fibers.  In older trees, the fibers fall away to reveal a smooth, ringed trunk.

Propagation
Windmill Palm seeds easily germinate in 8-12 weeks.

Landscape usage
Great accent palm as it responds well to the urban environment.  It fits well in small areas and containers and lis attractive in groupings.
