Beach information for
the disabled
Surf Chair®
J-Mac Industries Inc.
You
can enjoy Volusia County beaches even when you travel in a wheelchair. If
you cannot walk or your car has a handicapped ID, ask a Beach Patrol
member for a Surf Chair (all-terrain wheel chair). Surf Chairs are
designed for safe, comfortable travel in surf and soft sand.
Surf
Chairs are available free at these Volusia County Lifeguard stations and
parks:
- 301
Cardinal Blvd., Ormond Beach (386-676-4160)
- 11
South Ocean Ave., (Main Street), Daytona Beach (386-239-6484)
-
Dunlawton Avenue, Daytona Beach Shores
-
Lighthouse Point Park, Ponce Inlet
- Flagler
Avenue, New Smyrna Beach
- Frank
Rendon Park, 2705 Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach Shores
- Tom
Renick Park, 1575 Oceanshore Blvd., Ormond-by-the-Sea
Borrowers
are expected to comply with all regulations. Surf Chairs must be returned
within the specified time and an able-bodied attendant must remain with
the Surf Chair passenger at all times in the water.
No fishing
pole holders are made available to any beach patrons. However, Surf Chairs
are equipped with PVC pole holders as part of the frame of the wheelchair.
Handicap parking
Physically challenged beach patrons displaying a handicap
insignia in their vehicles will be permitted to park adjacent to the east side of the
established traffic lanes.
Conditions
East side parking is allowed only when tides permit.
Vehicles must display clearly a "handicap parking
only" sign in a window facing the traffic lane. Signs may be picked up and returned
at any Lifeguard Station or Beach Patrol vehicle.
Due to extreme congestion, east side parking is not to be
permitted in these areas: from the Silver Beach approach to the University Beach approach
in Daytona Beach and from Crawford Avenue approach to the 3rd Avenue approach in New
Smyrna Beach.
"Handicap Parking Only" spaces are provided at
all Lifeguard stations with the exception of the North County Lifeguard Station at 1665
Ocean Shore Boulevard (Roberta Road Cross Street) in north Ormond Beach.
