Lake George State Forest

George.jpg (7496 bytes)Lake George State Forest is a 19,610-acre tract located in the northwest corner of Volusia County. Habitat ranges from bottomland to hardwood forest and from sawgrass swamp to pine flatwoods, scrub and a small amount of sandhills. Cypress ponds and bays are embedded throughout.

The area was impacted by the wildfires of 1998. Only existing roads and fire lanes are available for hiking and birding. Nature trails, restrooms, picnic and recreation areas are not yet developed.

The forest is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., seven days a week, but a permit is required for entry. For more information, call the Bunnell District Office at (904) 446-6786. There is no fee for admission or for a permit.
