Volusia County Citizens Academy 2009

Day 4: The
Safety Zone, Part I
8 a.m.- 5 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009

How County Government protects its citizens is the focus of Day 4, the Safety Zone, the first of our two-day exploration of the Public Protection Department.
Highlights include demonstrations by Fire Services, a tour of the Branch Jail and a visit to the  Emergency Operations Center "war room," where key officials meet to make strategic decisions aimed at protecting the public during emergencies

8 a.m. - Welcome and introductions

8:15 a.m. - Fire Services presentation

8:45 a.m. - Board vans to Fire Science Institute

9 a.m. - Fire Services student interaction

10:30 a.m. - Board vans to Emergency Operations Center (EOC)

10:45 a.m. - Emergency Management presentation and tour

12 noon - Lunch

12:30 p.m. - Animal Control presentation

1 p.m. - 15 minute break/walk to Medical Examiner’s Office

1:15 p.m. - Medical Examiner’s Office presentation and walking tour

2 p.m. - Board vans for the Corrections presentation/Branch Jail tour

3:45 p.m. - Board vans to return to EOC and adjourn

We'll start Day 4 
at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), the central command center for emergency response in Volusia County.

Built in 1976 with a federal grant, this bunker facility is capable of operating during almost any type of disaster. 

Directions
The EOC is situated west of Daytona Beach, off U.S. 92 at 49 Keyton Drive.  Keyton Drive is off  Indian Lake Road.
