Marine Science Center program information
The Marine Science Center offers a wide variety of program for children and adults throughout the year. Students young and old can discover the many wonders of marine life in environmentally rich Volusia County. For more information, please call the Marine Science Center at (386) 304-5545.

Please note that program dates and fees may be changed without notice; weather may also affect programs. Programs are open to the public, and registration fees may apply. For advance registration or more information, please call the Marine Science Center, at (386) 304-5529.

Program times are 10 a.m. Wednesdays and 1 p.m. Saturdays unless otherwise noted.

November 2009

November 21
The Life of Owls - 1pm – 3 pm

Call for Registration:     386-304-5545

Alternately, wise creatures or an omen of doom, owls have fascinated mankind for thousands of years. Join us on this exploration of the life of owls and meet two of our live glove-trained owls. We will also have a chance to take apart an owl pellet and learn about the diet of these amazing creatures of the night. Registration is required.

Life of the Horseshoe Crab - 11 am – 12:00pm

Although called a crab, a Horseshoe Crab is actually more closely related to scorpions and spiders. One of the most ancient forms of life continues to thrive in our local estuaries as it has for eons. Join us to learn about why they have blue blood and how Horseshoe Crabs in the Delaware Bay play a vital role in the survival of a sandpiper that nests in the distant Arctic tundra.  Registration is required.

Would you like to help save sea turtles, or help injured birds, or open the eyes of a child to wonders of marine life, or perhaps work with fish, corals and aquariums?

If so, join us on to learn more about the volunteer opportunities at the Marine Science Center. Tour the Center and have the chance to see the inner workings of the sea turtle and bird hospitals, our educational programs, and aquarium maintenance. In addition, we will showcase opportunities to work in other areas of the County’s environmental work including educating the public about water conservation, assisting with watershed and beach cleanups, and helping with stormwater education projects

The Marine Science Center could not operate without the support of its vital corps of volunteers.  Whether your interest is in turtles, birds, fish, corals or other marine life, the creatures that spark your imagination are here. Whether your strengths are working with children, adults or in-between, here you will find opportunity. Whether your desire is to care for sick and injured animals and help them return to the wild or to help people understand more about the world around them, we have a need for you. Come and join us and make a difference in your world.

Right Whale Program - 1 pm

The Northern Right Whale is the most endangered of all of the great whales. From November to March each year, the Right Whale travels south from the North Atlantic to winter off the coast from Georgia to Central Florida. Here the females give birth to their young and provide us with the extraordinary opportunity to actually see these great beasts from our shore. Join us to learn more about these huge creatures and their travels to our coastline.  Registration is required.

December 12
The Life of Squids - 1pm

Did you know that squids have a mouth like a bird-like beak and that male squids die immediately after they reproduce? Who knew squids were so exciting! Learn all about these interesting mollusks and participate in a dissection to learn about the inner workings of this important animal.  This promises to be an educational journey like no other!  Registration is required.

No group of birds captures our imagination like raptors. Join us for this rare opportunity to meet the new collection of raptors. From the diminutive eastern screech owl to the power of the red-tailed hawk, this program will introduce visitors to the wide range of raptors found in Volusia County. Learn about the extraordinary adaptations that have made them the rulers of the air.  Participants should meet in the MSC lab. Registration is required.

Guided Tours

Marine Science Center – Entrance
Guided tours of the Marine Science Center are offered daily by the education staff. Please call for times, or check our activity board at the MSC entrance for specific tour times. Please allow a minimum of one hour to participate in the tour. No registration is required, however space is limited.


This citizen science series of programs allows the public to assist in ongoing work discovering more about the animals and plants that call Volusia County home. Participants can attend one or all of these programs and should meet in the MSC. The programs last approximately two hours. Registration is required. Please call (386) 304-5545. Environmental learning opportunities

The Volusia County Marine Science Center is expanding its learning opportunities with a new series and will offer programs where participants can explore archaeological sites, mangroves and wildlife havens, and participate in guided beach walks.

Participants should meet at the designated location and dress for the outdoors, bringing sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes. Advance registration is not required. All programs are free and open to the public, though park entrance fees may apply.
