In
May 1997, an Environmental Emergency Response Team (EERT)
was formed to provide technical assistance to the
County Hazardous Material
(HazMat) Team, police
departments, fire departments and other agencies when
responding to environmental incidents and emergencies
throughout the county.
The
purpose of EERT is to minimize the environmental
impacts resulting from hazardous and non-hazardous
material incidents. EERT implemented the philosophy of
using a suitably trained, specialized environmental
emergency response team to investigate and resolve
incidents during non-working hours.
In
order to provide competent and technical support in
emergency situations, EERT members must maintain a
high level of training.
All EERT members have received, at a minimum, training
which satisfies the requirements of 29 Code of
Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.120 (40 Hr HAZWOPER).
The
dedication of the EERT members has been demonstrated
by the 24 hours / 7 days per week on call service they
provide and their commitment to participate in
training exercises with the Hazmat team one evening
each month.
The
purpose of the Hazmat training drills is to maintain
coordination, gain knowledge and increase familiarity
with Hazmat operations. In addition, the team also
coordinates its activities with the State Division of
Law Enforcement, Bureau of Emergency Response.
