County Extension schedules casual gardening classes

Cultivate your green thumb with a series of free casual-gardening classes presented by Volusia County’s master gardeners and extension agents. Classes will be offered in DeBary, Deltona, Edgewater and Port Orange.

DeBary classes
DeBary Hall, 210 Sunrise Blvd Debary, FL 32713-3915
1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

  • October 1: - Review of the course as planned.
    • Participant input
    • Why home landscapes fail and care free gardening
  • October 8: - Home landscape design with introduction to Florida Friendly Landscaping and plant familiarization
  • October 15: - Soils, fertilizers and irrigation
  • October 22: - Lawn Maintenance
  • October 29: - General plant care - Part 1
    • tools and equipment
    • proper planting techniques
    • mulching and winter protection
  • November 5: - General plant care – Part 2
    • proper pruning techniques
    • common sense pest control

Upon successful completion of these classes, the participants will be able to:

  • Plan and evaluate a home landscape
  • Select the proper plants for a specific situation or need
  • Better care for landscape plants and lawns
  • Identify common pests and know how to properly treat them
  • Have a better understanding and appreciation of plants
  • Become a more efficient and knowledgeable gardener
  • Appreciate the value of preserving the environment
  • Save time and money

With few exceptions, practical demonstrations, handouts and the use of visual aids are planned. There will also be time set aside in each class to discuss participants’ questions and landscape concerns.

Monthly Plant Swap – Bring a plant and take a plant home (Label with name and growing information)

Bring soil samples to be tested at the Extension Service.
The cost is $1.00 for each sample.
