Quarterly Highlights

  • Melanie Baggs, 4-H leader of the Ranch Raiders 4-H club was named National 4-H Volunteer of the Year. She will be going to Washington D.C. this fall to receive the award.

  • 4-H youth participated in the National Endowment for Financial Education High School Financial Planning class, the Florida State 4-H Legislature in Tallahassee and 4-H Summer Camp.

  • The horticultural agents and master gardeners were busy this spring and summer with their Annual Plant Faire Fundraiser. Over 1,200 people attended the sale and educational programs.

  • A class of 25 new master gardener volunteers completed their 10 day training program.

  • A water conservation program was presented at the DeLand Area Chamber of Commerce Water Forum held at Stetson University.

  • Worked with the Agri business Interrelationship Committee to review the revised farm pond and tail water system ordinance.

  • Twelve master naturalists completed the 40 hour Coastal Systems Master Naturalist class.

  • Cracker Day had over 3,500 people attend the cattleman’s annual celebration of the cattle roundup.

  • Presentations were given to the Lake Helen Community Garden and the Florida Vegetative Management Association.

  • Two continuing education pesticide classes were conducted in Pierson.

  • The Family Nutrition Program was expanded to include summer programming for preschoolers in Volusia County schools.

  • Nutrition programs were also conducted at the Early Learning Coalition, Florida State Sheriff’s Executive Assistance Conference, Habitat for Humanity, Deltona Senior High, the City of Deltona, Volusia County employees and the Silver Sneakers and Mothers of Preschoolers.  

  • Three first time home buyers education classes were conducted and 38 clients completed the money management course.

  • Two 4-H Common Courtesy Academy classes were conducted with 34 youth attending.

  • Conducted a program on Housing to extension agents from throughout the state.

  •  4-H truly made a difference in two recent Volusia county college graduates. They attributed their graduation to the life skills and leadership 4-H
