June 28, 1998---10 p.m.

Community Information

A joint fire fighting effort continues between the Florida State Forestry Service; Volusia County Fire Services; federal, state and local agencies with mutual aid from firefighters from many states. More than 80,000 acres have been consumed. All fires have been contained. Clearing land for fire breaks, controlled burns and aerial water assaults continue.
Firefighters are concerned that a fire near Mims in Brevard County is burning towards Volusia County and could pose a threat to homes near Independence Ave. and SR 46. Progress is being monitored with preparations for response.
A spotover burning across SR 11 in northern Volusia County consumed about 1600 acres before being contained. Controlled burns and aerial assaults are expected to continue for several days. Roads will be closed when heavy smoke makes travel unsafe and will be reopened when smoke clears.
Emergency Management officials issued an urgent appeal Sunday night for 600
pillows. All current resources have been exhausted and help is needed. Those wishing to donate should phone the Emergency Management Center at (904) 254-1500.
