Wildfires in Volusia County continue
to burn, and firefighters are closely monitoring certain key areas for possible flare up
development.
A flare up overnight in the Lake Ashby area has
firefighters closely monitoring developments in that neighborhood.
Other areas of concern this morning include: the
Lake Harney area and areas up and down the South Volusia/Brevard County line, a small area
west of I-95 in the vicinity of I-95 and 442, and an area in the Barberville area, north
of State Road 40 in the vicinity of Bert Royal Road.
All roads in Volusia county are presently open to
vehicular traffic.
Volunteer relocation continues to be effect in the
Lake Ashby and Lake Harvey areas. Five new evacuation shelters have been added to the list
of those on stand by. They are Atlantic High School, Chisholm Elementary, Sweetwater
Elementary, and Spruce Creek Elementary and High Schools. Other shelters already on
standby include Palm Terrace, Deland YMCA and Ormond Beach Middle School.
Volusia County officials will be keeping a close eye
on the weather today. Westerly winds are expected to bring early afternoon storms to the
area, which may result in more fire activity due to lightning strikes. However, heavy
rains could douse those fires currently burning.
More than 1000 firefighters and support personnel
from across the nation are currently in Volusia County aiding in the firefighting efforts.
Donations of single serving bottles of Gatorade and packaged snacks are still being
accepted. All such donations should go to the Salvation Army for distribution, 560
Ballough Road in Daytona Beach. Cash donations to the Fireman's Relief Fund can be made at
any First Union bank in Florida.
