Firefighters continue fighting
blazes
Firefighters continued to battle stubborn blazes that
flared up around Volusia County throughout the afternoon, forcing evacuations in the
Ormond Beach, Edgewater, Daytona Beach and Pierson areas.
There were no serious injuries attributed to the fires,
although several firefighters battling the flames and extreme heat suffered from heat
exhaustion. Property appraisers were fanning out across the county tallying up
damage estimates. Confirmed damages include two houses, 10 mobile homes and four
commercial structures valued at approximately $2 million, according to Volusia County
Property Appraiser Morgan Gilreath.
Approximately 4,000 Florida Power & Light customers in
Volusia and Flagler counties were without electricity late Thursday afternoon.
Firefighters were battling gusty winds that complicated
efforts to contain the fires. New fires broke out Thursday in Pierson, Orange City and the
Lake Harney area, although no structures appeared to be in harms way.
The primary trouble spots for firefighters continued to be
areas west of Edgewater, the northern and western edges of Ormond Beach and the LPGA area
of Daytona Beach. Road closings included S.R. 44 between I-4 and S.R. 415.
