A
Good Day of Firefighting in Volusia County
The July
Fourth holiday was wrapping up on a relatively quiet
note as Volusia County firefighting efforts continued
to take the upper hand and Fire Services officials
were confident that firefighters had succeeded in
many of the tasks that had been set for them today.
Mop-up and the dousing of hot-spots continued.
Officials also remind residents that without
appreciable change in the weather, the overall
situation in the County remains volatile. Citizens
should also remain cautious due to smoke causing
reduced visibility and to remain aware of increased
emergency vehicle traffic on the Countys
roadways.
It was the second successive day in which there were
no reports of structure damage in the County, nor
were there any reports of injuries to citizens. Less
than 400 evacuees remained in shelters in the County.
County-wide, only two areas, near Ormond Beach,
remained under mandatory evacuation: Airport Road
north of Durrance Lane and the Hunters Ridge
sub-division.
It was hoped that two strike teams deployed from
Volusia to join in the fire fights in Flagler County
aided in the successful efforts to halt flame
advancing from the north.
Utilities outages had been mostly restored by
days end and there were no other utilities or
essential services problems.
The Halifax Humane Society had requested that
residents searching for pets should call 943-4928.
