Volusia County Fire
hosts joint-agency training

First responders from New Smyrna Beach,
Edgewater and Volusia County recently completed a day of live burn
training exercises at the Fire Training Center, 3889 Tiger Bay Rd.,
Daytona Beach.
According to Volusia County Fire Services
Captain Jim Koczan, training program manager at the center, this
training was the culmination of efforts by countywide trainers to
conduct regional training that will familiarize firefighters with their
counterparts at other fire agencies and to practice emergency procedures
in a controlled setting rather than during an emergency.
“It is important our firefighters get to
train with each other to sharpen their skills to provide the highest
level of service to the citizens we serve,” said Koczan.

According to Koczan, the half-day of live
burn scenarios allowed the firefighters to work with each other,
exchange ideas, and become familiar with each other’s equipment and
apparatus. Later in the day, the engine company lieutenants (Brian
Grace, New Smyrna Beach; Bruce Coates, Edgewater, and Shannon Prachniak,
Volusia County) were charged with leading crews through the evolutions
that included victim search and rescue and a firefighter mayday
incident.
“The learning experience and department
interaction made for a great day,” said Koczan.
