Fire Police

As support personnel and members of the Operations Team, the Fire Police arrive on the scene of an emergency incident in order to establish a secure perimeter around the scene. While on the scene of incidents such as; motor vehicle accidents, structure fires, brush fires, aircraft emergencies, boating and hazardous materials incidents, the Fire Police work to provide a safe environment for emergency rescue personnel and their vehicles and equipment as well as the public.

Currently, Volusia County Fire Services has approximately 15 Fire Police personnel. These individuals, all volunteers, have received over 150 hours of training in the Fire Police Training Academy and Volunteer Academy completed at the Emergency Services Institute. This training includes study and hands on experience in First Responder, CPR, Basic First Aid, communications, emergency vehicle operation, safety, incident management and scene control. Their training prepares them well to meet the demands of the position with instruction given by Fire Services personnel, as well as members of the Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol. This training is seen as a trailblazing effort in preparing Fire Police to the fullest extent to perform their duties. The Fire Marshal’s Office is now reviewing this curriculum to be used statewide for Fire Police training.

The position of Fire Police is a great way to provide support to Fire Services without having to meet some of the physical demands of being a firefighter. The members of the Fire Police provide a significant value to our department members, as well as members of the fire rescue and law enforcement community throughout the county, as they work to provide protection to those that protect the lives of others.
