In 2002, Volusia County experienced one of the least active fire seasons in recent memory. Fire activity was minimal due to weather patterns that held drought conditions in the low to normal range throughout the year.

Volusia County Fire Services responded to 274 brush fires in 2002. All were contained in 25 acres or less, and no brush fire operations lasted more than six and a half hours.
