Catalytic Converter Problem Reason for Smoke
Engine 46, Battalion 40 and City of DeLand Engine 82 responded in
February 2006 to a vehicle fire off of Highway 11. Arriving on the
scene, firefighters found a Mercedes Benz with light smoke showing. An
investigation of the vehicle determined that the insulation (used for
sound proofing) on the under carriage of the vehicle was smoldering and
there was not an active fire. This was caused by a problem with the
catalytic converter that heated the insulation to an ignition
temperature. The insulation from inside the engine compartment was
removed and air bags were used to lift the vehicle so the insulation on
the under carriage could be removed. Complete extinguishment was
achieved without damage to the interior of the vehicle and no injuries
were sustained.
