New Hire Academy
The New Hire Academy 2004-06 completes
their Technical Rescue Team introduction and swim assessment at the
Daytona Beach Community College pool. The assessment requires the members
to swim, tread water, and bring a weighted item from a depth of ten feet
out of the water.

Weekly Fitness
Routine
Kate Taylor, Fitness and Nutrition Specialist, demonstrates
proper technique as she introduces VCFS’ latest New Hire Academy to its
first week of morning fitness. New Hire Academy 2005-1 has accepted the
responsibility of helping Kate develop a progressively difficult weekly
fitness routine that emphasizes flexibility, aerobic capacity and general
strength improvement. Feedback from the firefighters has been positive and
we trust they will continue to practice good fitness upon completion of
the academy.

LP Burn
The VCFS New Hire Academy Class 2005-1 participates in the LP
emergencies live burn evolutions at the Fire Training Center. The
eight-hour course includes four hours of classroom instruction followed by
four hours of drills that include approach, stream placement and personnel
protection. Students also learn to work in the LP environment as a team,
an essential part of safe operations.

New Fitness
Program Producing Positive Results
The New Hire Academy Class 2005-1 completed
their physical fitness assessment as a follow up to the same assessment
conducted five weeks earlier. The results were outstanding with a group
reduction of their combined body fat percentage of 32.4% and individual
reductions ranging from 1% to 5.4%. Most members lost weight, while a
couple actually gained weight due to a loss of body fat and an increase in
muscle. These measurable improvements are attributed to the newly
implemented morning fitness program that incorporates a progressively
difficult routine weekly. This class was the trial group and because of
the success of the program, this established routine will be incorporated
into each new hire academy with some minor modifications made to the
program.
