The mission of the Emergency Services Institute and the Training Team is to provide our emergency personnel with current, high quality training and education which enables them to safely and effectively perform their duties. Such training includes recruit academies for both volunteer and career personnel, courses and in-service training covering all aspects of firefighting, emergency medical care, rescue, hazardous materials and other special hazards, and personal development programs for company officers and leadership skills enhancements.

The majority of Fire Services training is conducted on a 15-acre site with facilities that cost in excess of $1.2 million to construct. The Training Center has classroom and administrative offices, a four-story high rise drill tower, two-story burn building, LPG fire simulator, facilities for driver and pump training, SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) training maze, automobile extrication practice area, fire apparatus and equipment and numerous other training props used for hazardous materials and technical rescue training. It is certified by the Florida State Fire Marshal, Bureau of Fire Standards and Training as a full-service training facility.

The Emergency Services Institute, (originally the Fire Science Institute) was created through a partnership formed in 1996 between Volusia County and Daytona Beach Community College. With the formation of the partnership, our personnel are able to obtain vocational or college credit for much of their fire service training. The partnership has helped both organizations to benefit from the sharing of multiple resources.

The Training Team provides a variety of training and educational programs for numerous governmental agencies and other organizations throughout Florida. In addition to the partnership with DBCC, Fire Services offers training in conjunction with the Flagler County School Board for its Adult/Community Education programs. The Emergency Services Institute serves as the sponsor/co-sponsor for many fire service-related activities and educational events such as the 1997 and 1998 Great Florida Fire Schools and other nationally-recognized seminars.

For more information about the Emergency Services Institute, please call (386) 239-6430.
