The 1998 wildfires had a major impact on Volusia County. In the after action report, Wildfires '98 After Action Review, Volusia County's Experience, one recommendation was to establish the Volusia County Wildland Fire Coordinating Group (VCWFCG). The role of the Coordinating Group is to coordinate efforts to minimize the threat and/or impact of wildfires, reduce needless duplication of efforts and identify wildfire issues.

A steering committee, comprised of representatives from Volusia County Fire Services, the Volusia County Cooperative Extension Service, the Florida Division of Forestry and The Nature Conservancy, was asked to develop a list of groups who hold a vested interest in the effects of wildfires in Volusia County. With all interested parties working together, it will be possible to strengthen state, local and public sector relations as well as facilitate preventive control measures to reduce the damage and costs of future wildfires.
