February 2, 2007 - 8 a.m. Morning storm causes damage in West Volusia and New Smyrna Beach West Volusia Fire and rescue units are on scene in the areas of southwest DeLand performing search and rescue operations and initial damage assessment. There are reports of damage in the areas of Hawthorne Hills, Lake Beresford and Hontoon Island. According to Progress Energy, there are four transmission lines out in Deltona. There are 5,300 customers without power. New Smyrna Beach U.S. 1 is closed southbound from Nova Road to Industrial Park Avenue. It is open northbound. There are reports of 69 homes with damage in the areas of Islesboro and Turnbull Estates. There was one minor injury reported. There are approximately 800 homes without power. The New Smyrna Beach Utilities Commission is in the area working to restore power. They are urging residents with a generator to keep the main breaker circuit open for the safety of the utility workers. However, if they are aware of a generator running power to the home, they will not restore power. Parents should use caution when taking children to school due to limited accessibility. Volusia County Schools DeLand Middle, Southwestern Middle and Starke Elementary schools will be closed Friday, Feb. 2 due to damage and/or inaccessible roads. A Connect ED message will be sent to students/parents to notify them of the closings. Volusia County Health Department The Volusia County Health Department's Deland Clinic is closed because of severe storm damage. The clinic is located at 1330 S. Woodland Boulevard. Employees are not to report. Votran routes/schedule delayed Some Votran routes have been altered due to the road closures caused by the heavy storm damage. Schedules may be delayed. Some bus stops may not be served. The Volusia County Emergency Operations Center is partially activated. |
