Yard waste services
State law prohibits burying yard waste in landfills. Yard
waste in Volusia County is picked up at the curb and mulched at the landfill for reuse.
The equivalent of four 32-gallon containers or eight plastic bags per
household can be picked up each week. Please use your old garbage
containers for yard waste to eliminate need for bags and create more
quality recycling. Palm fronds and limbs may be neatly stacked (no need to
tie and bundle). Limbs may not exceed 4 foot in length or 1 foot in
diameter and must weigh less than 60 pounds.
Please DO NOT mix other waste material in with yard waste. Material must be at the curb by
6 a.m. on your yard waste pick-up day.
Disposing
of tires, appliances and furniture
Tires
State law prohibits burying tires in landfills. Residents may take up to
four typical automobile-size tires FREE on weekends only to the Tomoka Landfill, 1990
Tomoka Farms Road, Port Orange; or the West Volusia Transfer Station,
3151 E. S.R. 44,
DeLand. Passenger vehicle tires may be disposed at either
waste facility during weekdays for a minimal charge. Oversized or off-road tires may be
disposed at the Tomoka Landfill only for a processing fee.
For hours of operation or more information on the landfill
or the Transfer Station, see
Tomoka Landfill.
Appliances
Appliances also have been barred from landfill disposal. Please call your
hauler to schedule pickup. Appliances should be placed at the curb for pickup by your
hauler. These items are taken to the landfill for recycling.
Furniture
Furniture may be placed at the curb for
pick-up. These items are referred to as "bulk pick-up." Please
contact your hauler to schedule pick-up. Small items may be put out on your regular
household garbage day.
A great way to recycle unwanted items still in good shape is by taking the item to an
area thrift shop. For more information, see what you can recycle.

Motor oil
is
banned from landfill disposal and cannot
be placed with your garbage. Because motor oil can contaminate our water supply
if improperly disposed, all county residents should recycle used motor oil at the oil
recycling "igloos" at County Fire Stations and other facilities. For a list of
Igloo locations, see recycling drop-off sites.
Lead acid batteries, such as those used in automobiles, are another item that has been
banned from landfill disposal. By law, retail outlets which supply batteries must accept
your old one for recycling. You also may bring the battery to the household hazardous
waste facility at the Tomoka Landfill and the West Volusia Transfer
Station for recycling. Some recycling "buy back"
centers accept batteries for recycling. Please see "Recycling" in your telephone
book listings or contact the County's Recycling and Solid Waste Division at (386) 257-6021 in Daytona Beach, (386) 943-7889 in West Volusia, (386) 423-3862 in
New Smyrna Beach, and (407) 574-0598 in Osteen
Gasoline, paints,
thinners/solvents, pool chemicals and similar
materials cannot be disposed in your garbage
because they are harmful to the environment. Volusia County residents may dispose
household hazardous waste at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at the Tomoka
Landfill and the West Volusia Transfer Station.
Paint exchange
The landfill provides a non-commercial paint exchange facility
for residents of Volusia. An average of 300
gallons of paint are recycled through this facility each month. This facility provides
paint to non-commercial and non-profit organizations as available. Please
contact the landfill for more details at (386) 947-2952.
Household Hazardous Waste Amnesty
Days
The Recycling and Solid Waste Division offers more convenient
locations for the disposal of household hazardous waste during Hazardous Waste Amnesty
Days, usually offered in November and April each year. Several "off-landfill"
sites are provided throughout the County for residents who don't live close to the
permanent collection center at the Tomoka Landfill and the West Volusia
Transfer Station.
