PIERSON TEEN INJURED IN APPARENT ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting Wednesday night at a home in Pierson that sent a 15-year-old boy to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the face and hand. Initial reports from witnesses at the scene indicated that the teen accidentally shot himself. Sheriff’s deputies were still interviewing witnesses and sorting out the details of the shooting late Wednesday night.

Deputies were dispatched to 260 Olmstead Road after receiving a 911 call from the residence at 9:25 p.m. The victim, who was conscious and alert when deputies arrived, was transported by a Sheriff’s Office helicopter to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for medical treatment.

The victim’s older brother and the brother's girlfriend, both 23-years-old, were home with the victim at the time of the shooting. The weapon is believed to be a handgun owned by the older brother. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
