SKELETAL REMAINS FOUND NEAR BEACH

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of skeletal remains near Port Orange Saturday evening. The find is being investigated as a suspicious death at this time until the Volusia County Medical Examiner’s Office examines the remains and tries to determine a cause of death.

A group of kids ranging in age from 11 to 13 years old were playing ball on a public beach when their ball went into the back yard of 4275 S. Atlantic Ave. The back yard is large and covered in thick, tall grass at least two feet high. About three feet into the yard from a sea wall a boy found the remains of an adult, which were mostly skeletal, at about 6:28 p.m. The victim has been identified as an adult male. Investigators will use evidence found at the scene and dental records to determine the man's identity.

The Volusia County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to examine the remains on Monday to help confirm an identity and try to determine a cause of death.

Preliminary investigation into the discovery Saturday night of human remains reveals that the cause of death is apparent suicide. Investigators have a tentative identity of the victim, but the name is being withheld until dental records can verify the identity and next of kin are notified. It's believed the remains could have been in that location for a few years.
