MAN STRUCK AND KILLED BY TRAIN IN ORMOND BEACH

A 56-year-old man died Sunday night after being struck by a freight train in Ormond Beach. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the possibility that the death was a suicide. The victim’s name isn’t being released until family members are notified of the death.

The collision occurred at about 7:22 p.m. Sunday night along the train trussel where the tracks cross the Tomoka River. After the impact, the southbound train stopped and paramedics reached the victim minutes later to begin medical treatment. The victim was then transported by EVAC ambulance to Florida Hospital Ormond Memorial, where he was pronounced dead at 7:57 p.m.

Deputies were interviewing the conductor to try to find out what happened. However, the victim was taken for mental health treatment less than two weeks ago after expressing suicidal thoughts.
